Major renovation works are continuing at both Fort Purbrook and Fort Widley after a £2.1m grant was secured. It's a mixed picture in the Portsmouth area, with some landmarks being protected, and others left to rot.

'Remarkable' renovation taking shape at beloved forts - others at risk

The iron foundry and smithery was built 1857-1861, by Col GT Greene RE and Andrew Murray, Chief Engineer; extended 1878, with later alterations and the main part of the building was converted to office use in 2003. The east wing (Building 1/136) remains unused and at risk, Historic England says. There were concerns over drainage and regular flooding of the building but this has been resolved. Roof repairs are due to be undertaken.

The golden lion sculpture has been carefully restored by artist Pete Codling and can be found at the front of the Treadgold Industrial Heritage Museum in Bishop Street. The cobbled street itself is full of character as well, with Treadgolds - in the midst of a regeneration - opposite the historic Mitre Court House which was once the former stable block associated with Treadgolds. One the site of the building some stunning street art of a poppy to commemorate the first and second world wars.

Several sites in the Portsmouth area have been deemed as being "at risk" by Historic England, with many buildings expected to decay. Some of these have Royal Navy and armed forces connections.

Batteries No.1 and 2 were built in the Stokes Bay area of Gosport, primarily to defend against a sea-borne attack, and are located at the north-west end of the Stokes Bay Lines. They were part of a system of ramparts, moats and batteries built in the 1860s. The building is partly in use as The Diving Museum.
