From Inter Milan, Benfica, Monaco and Manchester United to Celtic, Rangers, Porto and Gibraltar, all have formed friendly opposition over the last 25 years.
And here’s a look back at 18 of the most memorable opponents Pompey have faced in summer fixtures...

9. Coventry (H) - July 29, 2000
Premier League Coventry visited Fratton Park to face Tony Pulis’ Pompey side, which included triallist Linvoy Primus. A crowd of 6,810 watched a 1-1 draw with substitute Luke Nightingale netting for the hosts, while Ysrael Zungi replied for a Sky Blues team which included Colin Hendry, Jay Bothroyd and future Southampton pair Paul Williams and Paul Telfer. 10. Benfica (at Guimareas) - August 2009
Pompey had already lost against Guimareas in their opening game of the Guimaraes tournament and they subsequently received a 4-0 hammering at the hands of Benfica. Paul Hart’s men faced future Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim as well as Javier Saviola and David Luiz, with Oscar Cardoza netting twice, along with Weldon and a Luke Wilkinson own goal. A number of triallists featured for the Blues, including Yassin Moutaouakil, Pancrate and Eugen Bopp. Photo: None

11. Manchester United (in Abuja, Nigeria) - July 2008
The FA Cup holders flew to Nigeria in the summer of 2008 to face Manchester United and Kano Pillars, followed by a trip to South Africa to place Ajax Cape Town. Their clash with Sir Alex Ferguson’s side was clearly the most high-profile, with the returning Peter Crouch starting up front with Jermain Defoe. Chris Eagles and Carlos Tevez put United 2-0 up before Defoe reduced the deficit in the last minute of a match which was disrupted by violence before kick-off as ticketless fans attempted to break into the stadium. 12. Rangers (H) - August 2009
New recruit Freddie Piquionne marked his Pompey debut with two goals against Rangers at Fratton Park with 9,018 present. Signed on a season-long loan from Lyon, the striker made an instant impact for Paul Hart’s side against a Rangers team containing Pompey 2008 FA Cup winner Pedro Mendes and veteran defender David Weir.
