From Inter Milan, Benfica, Monaco and Manchester United to Celtic, Rangers, Porto and Gibraltar, all have formed friendly opposition over the last 25 years.
And here’s a look back at 18 of the most memorable opponents Pompey have faced in summer fixtures...

5. Chelsea (H) - July 2011
New Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas marked his first match in charge with a 1-0 victory over Pompey, albeit handed to them by a Tal Ben Haim own goal. Played in front of 19,345, the Premier League club brought a star-studded squad to Fratton Park, changing teams at half-time and giving run outs to the likes of John Terry, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, Danniel Sturridge, Nicolas Anelka, Didier Dogba and Fernando Torres. 6. Bournemouth - July 2016
Whereas once Pompey would help out lower-division Bournemouth with a pre-season friendly, it was the other way around in the summer of 2016 with the Cherries a Premier League team. Gary Roberts, Michael Smith and Adam May netted for the League Two hosts in a 3-3 draw played in front of 5,153, which also doubled up as Alan McLoughlin’s long-awaited - and fully deserved - testimonial. 7. Liverpool (in Hong Kong) - July 2007
Harry Redknapp’s men met Liverpool in the final of the Barclays Asia Trophy in the Hong Kong Stadium in front of 29.535. The match finished goalless, so penalties were used to separate the sides, with Pompey triumphing 4-2 through goals from Matt Taylor, Lomana Lualua, Hermann Hreidarsson and Niko Krancjar. Little did anyone realise there would be a far more prestigious trophy arriving at Fratton Park come the end of the season - the FA Cup. Photo: Will Caddy

8. Porto (H) - August 2006
Linvoy Primus’ second-half own goal condemned Pompey to defeat against Porto in their final friendly of the 2006 summer. New signing Sol Campbell was paraded before supporters before kick-off, Kanu was in the directors’ box and David James was also heading to Fratton Park amid a flurry of late recruitment. In the meantime, a Harry Redknapo team not containing them lost 2-1, with Svetoslav Torodov having earlier cancelled out Lisandro’s early opener in front of 12,355. Photo: Matt Scott-Joynt
