From Inter Milan, Benfica, Monaco and Manchester United to Celtic, Rangers, Porto and Gibraltar, all have formed friendly opposition over the last 25 years.
And here’s a look back at 18 of the most memorable opponents Pompey have faced in summer fixtures...
17. Rayo Vallecano - July 2013
Guy Whittingham’s side faced their final preparation before the start of the 2013-14 season, although lost 2-0 to first-half goals from Saballs and Adrian. With 10 summer signings, the likes of John Sullivan, Joe Devera, Sonny Bradley, Romain Padovani and Andy Barcham lined up for the Blues in front of a 4,945 crowd. Photo: Joe Pepler
18. FC Utrecht - July 2018
Anton Walkes was Pompey’s goalscorer in a 1-1 draw with Dutch side FC Utrecht, watched by 4,299. Kenny Jackett’s men had new signings Lee Brown, Craig MacGillivray, Tom Naylor and Ronan Curtis in their side for a season which would, ultimately, see them win the Checkatrade Trophy and lose in the League One play-off semi-finals to Sunderland.
