Court documents state for the wounding with intent charge: “(You) unlawfully and maliciously wounded Gary Saunders with intent to do him grievous bodily harm.”

The knife possession charge reads: “(You) without good reason had in a public place, namely Kingston Road and Clydebank Road, an article which had a blade or was sharply pointed, namely a knife.”

A police spokesperson previously said of the incident: “We received a report that just before 6.30pm on Wednesday September 3, a man had been seriously assaulted on Kingston Road in Portsmouth.

“It was reported that the man had been hit by another man with a pole-like object and had also received a slashing injury to his face during the incident. He was later taken to hospital for treatment for serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.

“An investigation has been launched and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”

The case was sent for trial on September 7 next year. O’Reilly was granted conditional bail which includes an electronic tag for a curfew to run daily from 10pm to 6am.

He was also ordered not to contact Mr Saunders directly or indirectly.
