New 'dark crafts' alternative market brings tarot readings and folklore-inspired goods to Portsmouth
Salt & Sabbat market will launch on September 12
A new alternative craft market is coming to Portsmouth, bringing folklore-inspired ‘dark crafts’ and goods to Queen Street’s Treadgolds Warehouse.
Laura Gilbert-Anderson decided to set up Salt & Sabbat market after seeing an advert for an alternative market and being disappointed it was in the north of England.
“The north has an incredible alternative scene and I was very jealous there was nothing local to me that I could attend,” she said.
“I spoke to some friends and I asked if they thought it was a good idea and something I could do.”

Laura decided to set up a market with a name that represents the South Coast whilst also conveying the mystical theme of the goods on sale. She decided on Salt and Sabbat as it combines “the salt of the sea of the south coast” and “a secret midnight meeting of witches”.
The market will focus on selling goods from small businesses.
Laura said: “You can expect to find memorial art made with ethically sourced bones, stained glass art, folklore inspired illustration and so much more.
“We also have an amazing tarot reader and a tooth gemmer who will both be there on the day to help make the market more of an experience for people coming,” she said.

“The alternative community has so many different styles, and I feel we’ve got something for everyone, whether you’re an oddities collector or into colourful nostalgia. The curation of this market was very important to me to make sure everyone is seen.”
The market will be held at Treadgolds Warehouse, Queen Street on Saturday September 12 from 10am to 3pm.
