Carnegie Library in Fratton celebrates 120th anniversary in 'cultural milestone'
Residents have been invited to celebrate the landmark moment
A beloved library is marking its 120th anniversary and the public have been invited to celebrate the ‘cultural milestone’.
Carnegie Library in Fratton Road is hosting family dun day to honour the landmark moment. A day of free activities and local heritage has been planned for September 12.

Councillor Steve Pitt, Leader of Portsmouth City Council, said: “It's great to be celebrating another milestone in the city's cultural heritage, and it's perfectly timed to coincide with the national year of reading. Carnegie library is a beautiful and important building in the heart of Fratton and I'd encourage people to come along and enjoy a day of free, family fun.”
The celebrations will shine a light on the library’s rich past and its continuing role at the heart of the local community. Various activities have been planned for children, alongside a special talk and a free story time session.
At 10.30am, University of Portsmouth PhD researcher Jo Holmes will give a special talk exploring the story of Portsmouth’s libraries and Carnegie Library’s place in the city’s history. Throughout the day, children can take part in drop-in craft activities inspired by the library’s beautiful stained-glass windows and try an Edwardian-style game of hopscotch in the garden. Visitors can also explore an exhibition celebrating the history and heritage of Carnegie Library.
A special birthday cake will also be cut midday, followed by the story time session at 2pm. People of all ages are invited to celebrate the library’s 120 year history and find out more about its important role in the local community.
