An eighth-placed finish hardly eases the frustration of once more being unable to make the play-offs, let alone regain their place in the Championship.
Nonetheless, there are those who emerged from the season with plenty of credit, while others were a huge let down – and here are our player-by-player ratings for 2022-23.

17. Reeco Hackett - 5
Made 33 League One appearances this year, his most in a Pompey season, yet Reeco Hackett struggled for consistency despite natural talent. There were six goals overall, with that lovely left foot so devastating, but John Mousinho represents the third Pompey boss unable to get the best out of the erratic winger. Tellingly, the 25-year-old was omitted from the final three squads and, despite under contract until 2024, Pompey will try to offload him this summer. 18. Paddy Lane - 6
Last summer supposedly coveted by Brighton and Everton, Paddy Lane has endured a difficult second season in League One. He was short of confidence when recruited by Pompey in January and, during a low-key start to life at Fratton Park, then suffered a hamstring injury. However, upon his return, Lane started the last four matches and is gradually improving, culminating with his first Blues goal in the 2-2 draw with Wycombe. His willingness to attack with the ball at his feet is welcome and it will be intriguing to see how the talented 22-year-old develops. Picture: Jason Brown/ProSportsImages Photo: Jason Brown

19. Michael Jacobs - 6
A talismanic figure capable of a moment of magic, yet injuries and the need to not overload him have sadly once again impacted on his season. Although regularly available in the second half of the season, he featured regularly under John Mousinho - either from the bench or in the starting line-up - and continued to impress in parts. Will always be a popular player at Fratton Park, while is hugely popular character around the club. Picture: Jason Brown/ProSportsImages Photo: Jason Brown

20. Ronan Curtis - 5
Apart from a brief rallying of form under John Mousinho, it has been a disappointing season for the winger. Having lost his way under Danny Cowley, when barely utilised in his favoured left-wing role, January's new head coach appointment threatened to bring the best out of the Irishman. Indeed, there were plenty of encouraging signs, before Ronan Curtis suffered knee ligament damage against Bolton in February. Pompey have missed him too, with their lack of creativity obvious.
