An eighth-placed finish hardly eases the frustration of once more being unable to make the play-offs, let alone regain their place in the Championship.
Nonetheless, there are those who emerged from the season with plenty of credit, while others were a huge let down – and here are our player-by-player ratings for 2022-23.

21. Louis Thompson - 5
Louis Thompson broke his leg against Bristol Rovers in August and, despite returning four months later, could never break back into the team under a different boss. There were five starts under John Mousinho, but he finished the season as a substitute in eight successive matches, coming off the bench in just one of them. Always popular with the Blues support, there was a memorable goal from distance against Cheltenham in February. However, his time at Fratton Park has been hampered by injury, even though not all his own fault. Picture: Jason Brown/ProSportsImages Photo: Jason Brown

22. Dane Scarlett - 5
It all started so brightly for the Spurs forward, who looked a star in the making after bursting onto the Pompey scene. Even though he didn't get off the mark until his eighth outing, his overall performances were energetic and exciting as he settled into his first spell superbly. There was also an excellent man-of-the-match showing at Ipswich in November, when he netted in a 2-0 Papa Johns Trophy win. However, after that his form plummeted, while noticeably struggling when asked to play wide on the left. Dane Scarlett finished the season as an unused substitute in the final four matches. 23. Joe Pigott - 6
Has every reason to be disappointed with a haul of just nine League One starts during a season-long loan, yet Colby Bishop's form and successive managers' playing system preferences often relegated Joe Pigott to the bench. A striker with intelligence and vision on the ball, his qualities were obvious, yet being in and out of the side so regularly would never bring the best out of him. The Ipswich man totalled seven goals in all competitions and was largely well-regarded by Pompey fans. Picture: Jason Brown/ProSportsImages Photo: Jason Brown

24. Colby Bishop - 9
A staggering haul of 15 Player Of The Season trophies demonstrates how effective Colby Bishop was during his maiden Fratton Park campaign. What makes his 24-goal tally even more remarkable is it came in a team which long struggled for creativity, particularly in wide areas, with the ex-Accrington man usually feeding off scraps. Yet it wasn't merely his goals, it was his work-rate, ability to hold the ball up, power in the air, and willingness to operate within a team. A stunning season for the 26-year-old who the Fratton faithful hope will still be here next season. Picture: Jason Brown/ProSportsImages Photo: Jason Brown
