An eighth-placed finish hardly eases the frustration of once more being unable to make the play-offs, let alone regain their place in the Championship.
Nonetheless, there are those who emerged from the season with plenty of credit, while others were a huge let down – and here are our player-by-player ratings for 2022-23.

13. Tom Lowery - 7
A big miss to Pompey during his six-month injury absence, with Danny Cowley losing his job during that period. Still, has enjoyed an impressive impact since arriving as a free agent and is hugely popular among supporters, who have created their own Tom Lowery song. Tidy in possession and excellent vision, he provides a new dimension, although lacks the necessary finishing instinct to be played as a more advanced midfielder. 14. Ryan Tunnicliffe - 6
Once the forgotten man, Ryan Tunnicliffe's Pompey career was revitalised by John Mousinho, who brought him back in from the cold after exiled by Danny Cowley. Established himself as an essential starter during the injury absences of Tom Lowery and Marlon Pack, to ease their loss, and never let Pompey down. Clearly a clever player on the ball and versatile midfielder, although ominously was left out of the final three squads. Picture: Jason Brown/ProSportsImages Photo: Jason Brown

15. Jay Mingi - 6
A breakthrough season for Jay Mingi, who caught the eye during the summer and maintained that encouraging form for the first part of the campaign. Made his Football League debut at Forest Green in October and at one stage started 10 of 12 Pompey games, impressing with his driving runs from midfield. However, knee ligament damage sustained in training ahead of Spurs in the FA Cup applied the brakes and, despite a return to fitness, he hasn't played since New Year's Day. A new contract was tabled in December - and that has still to be signed. Picture: Jason Brown Photo: Jason Brown

16. Owen Dale - 5
Such a frustrating season for Owen Dale, whose commitment and attitude can never be faulted, despite being a loan player. Swiftly taken to the hearts of Pompey fans, his energy and effort down the flank stood out - but sadly an end product continued to elude. Largely a first-team starter, everyone wanted him to succeed, but, ultimately, must take some criticism for the lack of creativity which often blighted the Blues. Still, he will always be welcomed back to Fratton Park. Picture: Jason Brown/ProSportsImages Photo: Jason Brown
