But among the drama, there’s been a host of bizarre, wacky and often surreal moments down the years.
We asked you to names some of most stark-raving bonkers occasions from your Pompey memories – and you’ve come up with some absolute belters.

13. Stay up Baggies, Baggies stay up
The last game of the 2004-05 season and surely the only time Pompey fans have wanted their team to lose. West Brom are scrapping for survival and need a win to stay up - and send Southampton down. The Baggies duly deliver - cue a final-day love-in at The Hawthorns. Photo: Nick Potts

14. Praise be Linvoy!
If there was a time for the devout Christian to pop up with two goals it had to be over the period we celebrate the birth of his Lord and saviour! Two first-half efforts against from the defender against the side he grew up supporting have all us all rubbing our eyes in disbelief, but they earn the points with Teddy Sheringham's 81st-minute reply nothing but a consolation. 15. Monsoon season
A monsoon hits Fratton in October 2013 for the clash with Wycombe. Frogmore Road is a torrent, the tunnel a lake and the pitch under water. Match abandoned. Photo: Joe Pepler

16. Record breakers
Bizarre, surreal and bloomin' brilliant. The events of September 29. 2007 are etched in Pompey and Premier League folklore as a record 11 goals are shared with Reading. Harry Redknapp's come out 7-4 victors as the Bermuda Triangle, Twilight Zone and Ripley's Believe it or Not! are all channelled at Fratton Park. Photo: Barry Coombs
