But among the drama, there’s been a host of bizarre, wacky and often surreal moments down the years.
We asked you to names some of most stark-raving bonkers occasions from your Pompey memories – and you’ve come up with some absolute belters.

9. Track attack
Back to March 1987 and the Division Two promotion-winning season. Sunderland are the visitors as Tracker promo sees the bars dished out to fans. The Fratton End promptly use theirs to bombard under-siege keeper Iain Hesford. Photo: UGC

10. A watery farce
The two Division One title chasers meet at Fratton in November 2002, but the game is rendered a lottery by the farcical conditions in a game which should never have gone ahead. Leicester win 2-0 but it's Pompey who make the biggest splash as they storm to the title 20 years ago. Photo: Ben Radford

11. Looking back in anger
It's the opening day of the 1997-98 season, big-spending Manchester City have Lee Bradbury in their ranks and Oasis are on the pitch at Maine Road giving it the big 'un to the away fans. Pompey come away happy with a very creditable 2-2 draw, however. Photo: Phil Noble

12. Valley victory Parade
The final day of the 2002-03 season and it's a party at Valley Parade as the entire Pompey side wear Gianluca Festa's A-Line brand of boots, Svetoslav Todorov scores four goals to win the golden boot and even Yoshi Kawaguchi keeps a clean sheet in a second-half outing in the 5-0 romp, as Harry Redknapp's side are bound for the Premier League. Here's Lloyd Bagley with the boot Steve Stone launched into the crowd after the game. Photo: The News
