But among the drama, there’s been a host of bizarre, wacky and often surreal moments down the years.
We asked you to names some of most stark-raving bonkers occasions from your Pompey memories – and you’ve come up with some absolute belters.

5. Kneesy does it
Barely a day goes by where Alan Knight isn't reminded of the day he conceded an own goal from kick-off. The Legend was rubbing his knee as Noel Blake's backpass rolled past him at Wimbledon in 1984. Photo: Simon Miles

6. Drone stops play
A first in March 2019 as a drone flying over Fratton Park stops the game and players leave the pitch. Didn't seem to bother Pompey much as they romped to a 5-1 victory. Photo: Simon Hill

7. Pompey fans are pig headed
A promotion party with a difference as Pompey fans celebrate reaching the third tier at Northampton by taking to the pitch and throwing a pig's head around. Oh, those halcyon days... Photo: WALTRAUD GRUBITZSCH

8. Gale hell
One of the most infamous games in Pompey’s history. New Year’s Day sees Fulham arrive to take on Alan Ball’s side handily placed for a promotion challenge in gale-force winds. A four-goal first-half salvo seemingly sees the Londoner’s battered into submission, but goals from Alan Biley (2), Malcolm Waldron and Neil Webb are cancelled out as the visitors produce a shock comeback to make it 4-4.
