But among the drama, there’s been a host of bizarre, wacky and often surreal moments down the years.
We asked you to names some of most stark-raving bonkers occasions from your Pompey memories – and you’ve come up with some absolute belters.

17. In a hurry
It's the 1960-61 season and Pompey are in such a hurry to get away from Roker Park the teams bin off the half-time break and turn straight around. That allows them to get the express train back south, which was stopping specially at Durham to pick them up. It's a bleak journey as Pompey are handed a 4-1 hiding, in a season which saw them become the first top-flight champions to be relegated to the third tier. Photo: Evening Standard

18. All 'hail' the Yak!
The day even the weather gods were on Pompey's side. The south coast derby saw Southampton fans converge in the Milton End - the only stand in the Premier League where you could get wet. Cue an almighty hailstorm before kick off and a perfect day as Yakubu's goal makes it a first Fratton win over the Blues' fierce rivals for 41 years. Photo: Mike Egerton

19. I Predict a Riot
Pompey and Manchester United are paid a tonne of cash to play a friendly in Nigeria in 2008, the problem being it was about a month's wages for the locals to get a ticket. They instead looked for alternative ways to attend - including charging down a perimeter fence, hurling concrete at police and starting a full-scale riot. The ensuing scenes with the local constabulary were brutal. Photo: John Peters

20. Merse Magic
Did this really happen? Pompey fans are banned from travelling to Millwall after previous fisticuffs. They are instead watching a beamback at Fratton Park and witness one of the best performances ever from a Blues player. 'The best game I ever played in football in my whole life,' said Merson, as he orchestrated the 5-0 win and is given a standing ovation by home fans. Photo: Steve Reid
