In terms of targets, past behaviour is often a fair indication of what can happen in the future.
With that in mind, we’ve looked at past windows and the names who surfaced to see if there’s any potential clues over where Pompey can turn.
Of course, there will be some players linked with Pompey who are lot less credible than others with agents keen to see their clients names out there.

2. Hindolo Mustapha
A player who John Mousinho has watched on a number of occasions, but instead moved to German outfit FC Nurnberg on loan from Crystal Palace. Hasn't worked out and barely featured under Miroslav Klose, with the attacker failing to settle abroad. | Getty Images

3. Abdoulie Manneh
A player Pompey are known to be admirers of, with the goals flowing all season for runaway Allsvenskan champions Mjallby. Plenty of talk he will be moving on in the January window with leader, with Championship leaders Coventry most strongly linked. Photo: Dan Istitene

4. Alex Robertson
A move which ticks a lot of January boxes. Pompey have not settled on a midfield formula, with the department an obvious area of focus in the new year. Robertson is still very much on the periphery of things with League One leaders Cardiff City. | AFP via Getty Images
