Travel advice issued ahead of great south run weekend in Portsmouth
Residents are urged to plan journeys as 26,000 runners arrive this weekend.
Portsmouth residents have been offered travel advice as the Great South Run welcomes 26,000 runners to the city this weekend.
The event will take place on October 17 and 18, with a 5K, mini and junior events on Saturday, followed by the 10-mile run on Sunday.
The event will prompt road closures, parking suspensions and changes to transport services.

Portsmouth City Council is encouraging people to allow extra time for their journeys and check the latest information before travelling.
Motorists are strongly encouraged to use the city’s park and ride service, “which will operate a dedicated PR4 service to Clarence Pier”.
Parking at the site, just off junction 1 of the M275, will be limited, so passengers are encouraged to arrive early and travel together.
The A27 westbound will also be closed from Emsworth (Warblington) to Langstone from Saturday night until Monday morning.
People travelling to and from the Isle of Wight should also be aware that Wightlink car ferry services will operate from Portsmouth International Port throughout the Great South Run weekend.
“Visitors should also consider travelling by bus, train, walking, cycling or using Voi rental e-bikes and e-scooters where appropriate.”
Paul Foster, chief executive of The Great Run Company, said: “Our special relationship with Portsmouth spans over three decades and the Great South Run is always a fitting end to our running season.
“It’s an event full of local pride, rich heritage and passionate local communities and will see over 26,000 runners of all ages taking part across the weekend, with thousands of local supporters lining the course.
“The people of the city always turn out and create that famous Pompey atmosphere that the event has become renowned for. It’s no surprise that the Great South Run is widely recognised as the world’s greatest 10 mile event, and we can’t wait to do it all again this coming weekend.”
The event will also highlight Foster Portsmouth, which will be represented by a team of 20 runners raising awareness of the need for more foster carers in the city.
Councillor Steve Pitt, leader of Portsmouth City Council, said: “The Great South Run is a fantastic event for Portsmouth, bringing people together and showcasing the city at its best. With thousands expected over the weekend, we’re encouraging everyone to check the latest travel information before setting out.
“It’s also a chance to celebrate the individuals and organisations taking part for a cause. We’re delighted that Foster Portsmouth will be involved again, helping raise awareness of the vital role foster carers play in supporting local children and young people.”
