The city and surrounding towns and villages are packed with natural beauty and historic charm, and these top spots showcase the area at its finest. From peaceful woodlands to sea views there’s something for everyone.
Holly Hill Woodland Park has stunning lakes, woodlands, and a riverside walk, while Port Solent has a marina which could make you think you are on holiday on mainland Europe, and Emsworth has a magnificent Slipper Pond where you can feel you are getting away from it all.
Whether you’re after history, wildlife, or just a beautiful walk, these destinations highlight the very best of the Portsmouth area which I love — rich in scenery, full of character, and perfect for day trips or long weekends.

13. The Spice Island Inn, Old Portsmouth
With its cobbled streets, historic buildings and remnants of the old tram lines I love a visit to Old Portsmouth and the atmosphere which goes with it. I love watching the ships go by and the stunning view out towards Gosport. But it has that added dimension of feeling like it is old versus new with its views out across to the trendy Gunwharf Quays and Spinnaker Tower. Picture: Shaun Roster Photo: SR

14. Wickham Water Meadow
The wonderful Wickham Water Meadow can be found a stone's throw away from the centre of the historic town square and is the perfect setting for a little stroll as you sit next to the river which passes over the area like tiny rapids. You can then go up a few steps and you will be on the wonderful Meon Valley Trail (pictured) along the old abandoned railway track. Photo: Contributed

15. Stansted Park
You cannot help but be impressed by the perfect scene created by Stansted House being surrounded by the beautiful parkland area. It is certainly one of my favourite picture-perfect places to visit with its formal gardens, open spaces and glorious woodland. | Paul Garrod

16. Staunton Country Park
This little gem of a country park is perfect all year round, but is fantastic in the autumn as it features three main walks of varying lengths, the shortest of which is around the main 3.5 acre lake which follows a path. However if you are feeling adventurous you can take on one of the longer walks too. The site features a park, cafe and follys as well as the outline of where the estate's mansion on the site once stood. Photo: HCC
