The city and surrounding towns and villages are packed with natural beauty and historic charm, and these top spots showcase the area at its finest. From peaceful woodlands to sea views there’s something for everyone.
Holly Hill Woodland Park has stunning lakes, woodlands, and a riverside walk, while Port Solent has a marina which could make you think you are on holiday on mainland Europe, and Emsworth has a magnificent Slipper Pond where you can feel you are getting away from it all.
Whether you’re after history, wildlife, or just a beautiful walk, these destinations highlight the very best of the Portsmouth area which I love — rich in scenery, full of character, and perfect for day trips or long weekends.

9. Buriton
Buriton is popular with dog-walkers, cyclists and those who, like me, love a Sunday stroll. This village has many gorgeous pubs that are perfect for lunch as you take in everything Buriton has to offer. My favourite picture perfect spot is at the pond! Photo: -

10. Alver Valley Country Park in Gosport
There is much to enjoy this wildlife haven through the changing seasons and with so many different areas to explore with their own picturesque moments. You are walking through woody areas and ponds one moment, and then out on the open grass the next! Picture: Sarah Standing (180641-3088) Photo: Sarah Standing

11. Petersfield Heath and Lake
With its accessible paths around the Heath Lake and playground situated right next to the heath itself, Petersfield Heath is a great picture perfect spot to visit. Just make sure you bring food for the ducks and geese! Picture: Anne Purkiss Photo: Anne Purkiss

12. Slipper Mill Pond at Emsworth
This small town is a beautiful places to visit and some lovely views out across towards the wider Chichester Harbour area. One of my favourite places to sit is next to the Slipper Mill Pond which is slightly away from the busiest areas and is often frequented by ducks and swans. Photo: Kate Shemilt ks190277-2
