Hundreds of people to take part in inaugural Pompey Games with free sports experiences

Families thought the idea was brilliant and all 500 places were snapped up

The inaugural Pompey Games will see hundreds of people take part in a day of free sports activities.

Taking over the Mountbatten Centre on September 12, 500 residents are being brought together together for a free day of games, creativity, movement and community activity. Clair Martin, founder of community interest company Seekers Create, said she could not be more excited.

“Pompey Games started with a simple idea,” she said. “What would happen if we created a huge playground where families could play, make things, move around and spend time together without needing to spend any money?

“The response has been incredible. All 500 places have gone, but what has really made the event possible is the generosity of organisations across Portsmouth and beyond.”

In partnership with BH Live, Pompey Games combines sporting activity with creativity and promises a whole host of activities for families. It runs between 11am and 3pm, with visitors having access to the sports hall, function suite, running track and outdoor areas.

Kids will collect stamps as they move around the event and take on sporting and creative challenges, which includes a lap of the Mountbatten track and a mass group dance.

Across the venue families can expect musical games, Stuck in the Mud, egg and spoon races, basketball, cornhole, obstacle activities, doodling and creative challenges. People can can run, walk, skip or wheel around the athletics track before joining games and activities on the field. An awards ceremony and community picnic have also been organised.

Free food will be provided by Rapid Relief Team, with major partners including Hampshire Flag Company, Blagrave Trust, and other supporters. Ms Martin added: “Then there are so many other organisations bringing activities, staff, materials and energy into the day.

“We didn't want rows of stalls where families picked up leaflets. We wanted the organisations involved to play alongside people and become part of the experience. Pompey Games is about reminding ourselves that playing, creating and connecting is for everybody.”

Carla Earle from BH Live said: “Pompey Games is a fantastic opportunity for families to experience the Mountbatten Centre in a different way and enjoy being active together. Working with Seekers Create has allowed us to bring sport, creativity and community activity together across the whole venue, with something for people of different ages and abilities to take part in.”
