Despite this, Danny Cowley has a clear idea what attributes he wants from the four forwards he desperately wants this summer.
As a result, we’ve examined the stats from last season to see which front men would be the perfect fit for the Blues.
But who are they?
Here’s who we’ve selected from with the help of Wyscout’s statistics
5. Jayden Stockley – Charlton
Cowley and Pompey are well aware of Stockley's ability after almost signing him last season. He scored 20 goals last season and proved to be much more than a target man once again. Picture: Jacques Feeney/Getty Images Photo: Jacques Feeney
6. Kion Etete - Spurs
The 20-year-old could be the perfect fit for Pompey due to his height and ability on the ball. This has seen him rise high on Cowley's list of targets and wants him permanently. Last season across loans at Northampton and Cheltenham, he scored nine times. Photo: Steve Bardens
7. Jonathan Leko - Birmingham City
Leko has swashbuckling pace and can also play out-wide. In the right system he could be real asset to Pompey after struggling for goals on loan at Charlton last season. In total, he scored three goals, but at 23, still has lots of growing to do. Picture: James Chance/Getty Images Photo: James Chance
8. Sam Smith – Cambridge United
Like May, Smith took to life in League One with ease last term and scored 21 goals in all competitions for the U's. Wyscout has rendered such form as impressive and he could fit into the mold of a mobile striker looking to form another strong partnership. Picture: Marc Atkins/Getty Images Photo: Marc Atkins
