Some tough decisions will be required if the Fratton Park outfit are to return next season with a squad more equipped to challenge for promotion.
And it’s a process that will kick off more or less immediately after Pompey’s final game of the season against Wycombe on Sunday, May 7.
Calls on those first-team players who are now in the final weeks of their contracts have to be made.
But that’s not the start and finish line as far as outgoings are concerned.
The Blues are realistic to know that others within their current ranks could attract interest from elsewhere.
Meanwhile, the decision could be taken to sell others on – those deemed not natural fits for the project at hand.
But what potential departures could we see amid another Pompey overhaul?
We take a look to see what players could realistically be elsewhere by the time the 2023-24 season begins.

9. Joe Morrell
Putting his recent four-match ban aside, Morrell has - arguably - been Pompey's best player over the past five months. And, coupled with his regular forays on the international stage with Wales, there's every chance his performances will have caught the eye. There's no doubt Morrell loves it at Fratton Park - but can the same be said about playing in League One? Pompey might need to demonstrate they mean business next season to potentially keep the 26-year-old who came close to joining Championship-bound Ipswich before his Blues U-turn. Photo: Jason Brown

10. Reeco Hackett
The forward confessed recently that his performances this season have been nowhere near good enough. He also admitted there was a growing frustration with a lack of regular match minutes during his time at Fratton Park. Well, those two admissions combined suggest neither Hackett nor the club are truly happy with how things are. Like Tunnicliffe, his absence for the Accrington game was telling. And it makes you wonder, if clubs come calling in the summer - like they did in January for Hackett - will there be much reluctance from the club to do business? Probably not. Photo: Graham Hunt

11. Louis Thompson
Thompson is a hugely respected figure in the Pompey dressing room but just one 20-minute outing over the past five games suggests the Blues are moving on without the soon-to-be out-of-contract midfielder. The 28-year-old still has plenty to offer but a midfield shake-up appears to be the order of the day in order to get Pompey more competitive next season. Photo: Jason Brown

12. Jay Mingi
There's been plenty said about the young midfielder in recent weeks, with a spokesperson for Mingi initially questioning his lack of game time in recent weeks. Head coach John Mousinho has since countered any claims made - but there's still no sign of the 22-year-old adding to the 26 appearances he's made during his breakthrough season with the club. With that said - the chances of Mingi remaining at Fratton Park beyond the season are looking increasingly remote. He's out of contract, with nothing to suggest an agreement to remain is close.
