Championship rivals Hull City land reported Portsmouth and Oxford United January transfer target Paddy McNair

Pompey were credited with an interest in Paddy McNair earlier in the January window.

Reported Pompey transfer target Paddy McNair has completed a January move to the Championship.

The former Sunderland and Middlesbrough man was tipped with a switch to Fratton Park this month as Pompey looked to bolster their defensive ranks.

It had been suggested a loan move was on the offing for the San Diego FC man as he looked to pick up much-needed game time during the MLS off-season.

The successful Manchester United academy product can operate across the backline and also step into midfield if required - positions which John Mousinho has been looking to strengthen.

McNair, though, has sealed a swoop to the Championship before next Monday’s deadline, completing a switch to Hull City.

The experienced operator reached an agreement with San Diego to end his stay in the United States, with his terms set to come to a close at the end of 2027.

The centre-back has penned a permanent deal at the MKM Stadium, signing an 18-month deal with Sergej Jakirovic’s side, who also hold an extra 12-month option.

The Tigers bolster their ranks as they push for promotion to the Premier League and currently sit fourth in the standings - five points away from the automatic positions.

McNair was in attendance for Hull’s triumph over Swansea City on Saturday and revealed a move to the north east has been in the ‘pipeline for a couple of weeks’.

He told the club’s official website on his arrival: ‘It feels great to be here. It had been in the pipeline for a couple of weeks, so I'm very happy to get it over the line.

‘I've played in the Championship for a lot of seasons and the one thing I'm missing is a promotion.

‘It was a great opportunity to come to a big club that's sitting well in the table. It would be great if we can push on towards the end of the season and get that goal.’

Pompey have been busy this month as Mousinho looked to strengthen for a hugely-important Championship run in.

Millenic Alli kick-started the Blues’ business as he sealed a loan move from Luton Town and was quickly followed through the doors at Fratton Park by Ebou Adams, who completed a reported £500,000 move from Derby County.

Keshi Anderson is the latest to arrive at PO4 making the switch for a free-transfer following his departure from Birmingham City earlier in the window.

The head coach is hopeful of one new face prior to Saturday’s crucial game against relegation rivals West Brom at Fratton.
