Loan opportunities set to surface for Portsmouth over transfer window finale
The Pompey boss points to the importance of the late loan deals he expects to surface before 7pm on Monday night.
Pompey still expect to fill their loan slots over the transfer window’s finale
And John Mousinho anticipates decent late opportunities to present themselves, before the close of winter player trading at 7pm on Monday night.
Pompey ready for late loan chances to surface
Pompey are closing in on adding to their three signings so far this month, with a fourth new addition in the pipeline before Saturday’s Championship clash with West Brom.
Ebou Adams and Keshi Anderson have both arrived in permanent deals, with Millenic Alli the first player to join on loan from Luton Town until the end of the season.
Sheffield Wednesday’s Svante Ingelsson is being chased with a bid made for the midfielder, while Dundee defender Luke Graham is also a target.
They would be permanent additions, however, though Mousinho has made it clear loan deals will play a significant role in Pompey’s late-window business.
The club currently has three loanees in Alli, Ipswich’s Conor Chaplin and Swansea City’s Florian Bianchini, meaning there’s space for two other loan players in a matchday squad.
With a clear short-term target of remaining in the Championship, Mousinho believes filling those slots is a logical outcome over the coming days.
Although Pompey will have an understanding of how that looks, the head coach feels being ready to react to opportunities which surface late on will be prudent.
A clear example of an unlikely loan opening surfacing late in the day was seen at the climax to the summer window, when a shock chance to land Chaplin appeared.
Mousinho: ‘Surprised if we don’t fill our loan spots’
That was something Pompey reacted to rapidly, with Mousinho ready for his club to potentially do something similar once again.
Mousinho said: ‘It’s not set in stone, but I’d be surprised, if we’re saying publicly we want to be short term and the first priority is to stay in the league, we don’t fill our loan spots.
‘We’re incredibly flexible. We’re not Liverpool or Man City who want a specific target for £50-60m.
‘We react to the market. We’re really pro-active in terms of what we have on our list, but we react to the market. If someone becomes available we think will affect us, we will take them.
‘They do tend to (come up late). Players will get frustrated because they’re not playing towards the back end of the window, things will change after the weekend, players aren’t in squads and Premier League players filter down. There’s all sorts of things.
‘Things start to move, you’ll see it over the next five days. There will be loads of movement, but particularly loans moves will free up.’
