The names were coming thick and fast, even before the Championship season ended.
And the flow of touted Pompey targets never let up from there, until the window closed on September 1.
We’ve pulled together a list of the players linked with the Blues, a little insight into their credibility and an update on what is now happening with those men - with some wildly varying results.
9. Jonathan Tomkinson
American defender was tenuously touted with a Pompey, as he became a free agent and left Norwich City. Nothing came up for Tomkinson, though, until recently joining Steve Cotterill at Cheltenham Town. | Getty Images
10. Jamal Lowe
Talk of a homecoming from crisis club Sheffeld Wednesday surfaced, but nothing doing and the League Two title winner remains with the Owls. | Steve Ellis
11. Alex Robertson
Pompey had an eye on Robertson this summer with a host of Championship sides keen. He stayed at Cardiff, however, where he's been injured and some intriguing quotes of late from Brian Barry-Murphy, saying he needed more 'intensity' to be considered now he's fit. | Getty Images
12. Abu Kamara
Pompey's admiration of Abu Kamara has never wavered, though, a deal never looked on the cards as the winger had the likes of Birmingham City and Rangers on his trail. Moved to La Liga with Getafe where he's made three appearances so far - including facing European giants Barcelona. | AFP via Getty Images
