‘It's all very well blaming the agent’ - Abu Kamara verdict delivered as 'no-brainer' Portsmouth move from Hull enters saga territory

Pompey’s pursuit of Hull City’s Abu Kamara this summer is entering transfer saga territory

‘Surely it would be a no-brainer’.

That’s the verdict of Neil Allen after he was asked to share his thoughts on a potential move back to Fratton Park for Abu Kamara in the latest episode of Pompey Talk.

The News’ chief sports writer believes the 22-year-old would be wise to return to PO4 following two ‘honking’ years on the books of Hull City and a loan spell at Getafe.

The Blues possess the same management and coaching structure, headed by John Mousinho, that got the very best out of the winger during the club’s memorable 2023-24 League One title-winning season.

And with the entire Fratton fanbase wanting a reunion to materialise, Kamara is guaranteed to once again feel love that he’ll not have felt after his Fratton loan ended.

That love has already been extended via the words of sporting director Rich Hughes, who has twice made public Pompey’s wish to be reunited with the player.

But with a move that looked straightforward on paper turning complicated amid reports that ‘his agent may have other ideas’ and reported interest from Charlton, Allen has rightly questioned Kamara’s commitment to a return.

He’s asked, if the player really wanted to come, then why all the noise as a transfer saga evolves?

‘Pompey was the best form of his career’

Kamara is currently away with Hull on a pre-season tour that will take in friendlies in Slovenia, Turkey and Germany.

The forward scored in the Premier League new boy’s 3-0 win against Konyaspo at the weekend and played the first half as the Tigers beat Çaykur Rizespor in Maribor on Tuesday.

With that in mind, The News understands any decision on his future is not imminent.

In the meantime, though, Allen has been sharing his thoughts on a transfer story that’s rumbling on.

Speaking on the latest episode of Pompey Talk, he said: ‘It's a funny one, because Pompey never talk about contracted players, but they're quite happy to be linked with Kamara publicly.

‘Rich Hughes has spoken about it several times now, twice in pre-season he’s spoken about it, so they like to be linked with him.

‘They're a huge fan of him, they are pursuing him without any question.

‘He's had a honking last two years, not played games, not performed well, (so) you'd think the chance to come back to Fratton Park, who are now in the Championship, under the manager and management who brought the best out of your career to this date, you’d think that would be a no-brainer for him after two really poor years.

‘Now the agent’s (apparently) going round, looking at other options for him, as well as Pompey.

‘Kamara has a say in this (though). I know the agent’s getting vilified, but Kamara does have a say.

‘If a player wants to go back to Pompey, why can't he come back to Pompey? He does have a say in this as well.

‘For me, surely it would be a no-brainer. Pompey was the best form of his career. Nothing's come close, albeit in League One.

‘So come back, same head coach, he's loved, he's wanted, the fans are giving him a great reception. So why's he not come here so far then?

‘It's all very well blaming the agent, but players, believe it or not, do have a huge say in transfers.

‘So why is Kamara not pushing to come back to Pompey? Why is the agent reportedly taking him to other clubs, exploring other options? Is the agent telling Kamara what to do? Does Kamara want to come back? We don't know.

‘But what we do know is that Pompey want to sign him, unusually being very prominent and talkative about a contracted player.

‘And by all accounts, Hull want to let him go as well.’
