Report: Midfielder rejects £1.3m Portsmouth transfer amid Schalke, Swansea and Watford interest
Reinforcing their midfield has been a priority for Pompey during the current transfer window
Pompey’s reported interest in Hungary midfielder Mate Tuboly has ended.
Last month Sky Sports claimed the Blues had lodged a £1.3m bid for the 21-year-old with his current club DAC Dunajska Streda, who operate in the Slovakia top flight.
Keen to bolster their midfield ranks. it was reported Pompey set their stall out to land the defensive-minded player, who has also been on the radar of Swansea and Stoke over the past 12 months.
The news emerged after Pompey’s efforts to sign Volendam midfielder Gibson Yah fell through, with the former Ajax player instead joining Championship rivals Bristol City.
Yet according to Sky Sports’ Lyall Thomas, the Blues’ pursuit of Tuboly also ended in disappointment, after he rejected the opportunity to move to Fratton Park.
The same report mentions Bundesliga side Schalke as a possible destination for the highly-rated Hungary under-21 international. However, German media outlet schalketotal.de claims the Royal Blues do not have a huge need in central midfield like Tuboly.
The Fratton Park outfit have since signed Estonia international Rocco Shein, with the 23-year-old moving to PO4 from Fredrikstad this week on a three-year deal for an undisclosed transfer fee.
It’s not clear whether his signing is a result of unsuccessful moves for Yah and Tuboly or whether it’s always been Pompey’s intention to add a couple of new faces to their midfield department.
Following Andre Dozzell’s departure on a free transfer at the end of last season, Ebou Adams, Marlon Pack, Luke Le Roux and the long-term injured Mark Kosznovszky were Pompey‘s midfield specialists as they returned to pre-season at the end of June.
Given Le Roux’s struggles to establish himself in the Championship and Kosznovszky’s absence until the end of the year, another midfielder to follow Shein through the doors at Fratton Park is not inconceivable - even if free-transfer arrival Odin Bailey can operate there.
