'We get it': Portsmouth transfer state of play as sporting director provides progress report
The transfer window opens on June 15, and it’s expected to be another busy summer at Fratton Park.
Rich Hughes doesn’t expect Pompey to rush their transfer business, with the summer window now firmly on the horizon.
But the sporting director has promised the Blues are already holding ‘good conversations’ with potential targets as they look to strengthen.
That’s something Pompey have previously repeated with Jordan Williams arriving on the first day in 2024, while Conor Shaughnessy, Will Norris and Christian Saydee all completed their respective moves when the summer market opened in 2023.
However, the sporting director isn’t anticipating any early business this year given the current state of the Championship market.
Instead, it’s about finding the ‘sweet spot’ with their respective targets and trusting the process.
When Fratton faithful can expect Pompey to make signings
When asked by BBC Radio Solent how the transfer market was bearing up, Hughes said: ‘Very slowly at the minute.
‘I probably sit here every year and say that, and I’m grimacing a little bit knowing I’m going to get a lot of pelters for a lack of action. We get it and we’re having a lot of conversations.
‘I think it’s finding that sweet spot between who’s top of our list and those players then having us at the top of their list. And when that’s the case, everything gets squared together pretty quickly.
‘We’re having lots of good conversations, we’re in some good positions on a few things at the minute and we’re as keen as anyone to get as many of the group in for pre-season as we can.
‘However, what we won’t do is commit to doing the deals we know we can do, we’ll commit to doing the deals that are going to make us better.
‘Hopefully they come as quickly as they can but ultimately these processes do take quite a bit of time to put together and make sure we get the right players in the building.’
The current state of Championship market

There are expected to be plenty of big spenders in the Championship this summer, with the likes of West Ham, Wolves, Burnley and Southampton all being boosted by Premier League parachute payments.
Hughes, though, is realistic with where Pompey sit in the grand scheme of things financially.
‘I think it’s tough at the top end (of the Championship) but realistically we know we are not going to be competing for players with these teams that have come down with parachute payments and someone like a Middlesbrough, who lose in the play-off final.
‘We know there’s a lot of money on the table but our job is to make sure we’re competitive with what we do.
‘We’re not going to be going toe-to-toe with those teams that are relegated, but what we are now confident we can do is go toe-to-toe with the teams towards the bottom half of the Championship and sell what we’re trying to do and bring in the right bodies for us moving forward.’
