‘At the right price’: No-nonsense Portsmouth assessment over loan trio’s Fratton Park future

The permanent Pompey futures of Millenic Alli, Conor Chaplin and Gustavo Caballero have been under the microscope ahead of the summer window.

Pompey should make moves to sign Millenic Alli and Gustavo Caballero this summer.

But the Blues should look beyond Conor Chaplin in a bid to strengthen their frontline despite the forward’s release by Ipswich Town at the end of the campaign.

That’s the no-nonsense verdict of The News’ Jordan Cross, who has given his assessment over the loan trio’s stints at Fratton Park.

The futures of a number of John Mousinho’s loan signings have been under the spotlight following the campaign’s climax, with supporters split over who should return on a permanent basis in the upcoming transfer window.

Alli, who arrived from Luton Town in January, had varying success on the south coast, with a brilliant start followed by a dramatic dip in form as he answered the Blues boss’ SOS.

Caballero, meanwhile, netted one goal in his 12 outings but his season was cut short with five games to go due to injury.

With Jacob Brown, Florian Bianchini and Aji Alese highly unlikely to resign this summer, Cross discussed the possibilities of securing Alli, Chaplin and Caballero on a permanent basis in the transfer window - and whether Pompey should sign them.

Here’s what he said on the latest episode of Pompey Talk.

Millenic Alli

‘Yes I would. Milli Alli has been quite a divisive figure, it’s fair to say.

‘Really hit the ground running, but his form plateaued and that’s being nice, maybe quite a dip actually.

‘In his defence (it was) a really heavy run of games, back-to-back games, starting all the time and really demanding of him. But I would like to see Pompey make a move for him.

‘I wouldn’t necessarily have him as a frontline option, among the ups and downs of the season these things happen. I would like to have Josh Murphy fit and starting every week.

‘And I think what John (Mousinho) wants to do is have four wingers that he can change on 60 minutes, so four really strong wingers who can come in and maintain the intensity.

‘I asked him (John Mousinho) what do you mean by extreme? And he said about his extreme physicality, his pace but he’s erratic, makes bad choices, and gives the ball away.

‘Having watched him for a few months I wouldn’t ask that question again by what he means by extreme because I firmly understand what he’s on about.

‘That said, he’s got that match-winning quality and that would be enough for me to give him a deal. That’s my take on him.’

Conor Chaplin

‘There’s a real authenticity about Conor when he speaks.

‘I regard him as a friend, I’ve been around and seen Conor emerge when he was a youngster here and come back.

‘The standards he sets about the place, the qualities he’s brought around the dressing room - we know he hasn’t been at the levels we hoped for this season no doubt about it.

‘My heart tells me I’d love Conor Chaplin back, but my head tells me it’s unlikely.I’ve reported a story to that extent already that it looks like Pompey will likely go elsewhere.

‘I think Conor would still have a lot to offer and it would be sad if he doesn’t come back.

‘He’s dearly loved around the place and everyone would be appreciative of what he’s done and the qualities not everyone saw actually with what he did to help keep Pompey in the division and he certainly contributed to that.’

Gustavo Caballero

‘Dismiss the other ones (Jacob Brown, Florian Bianchini, Aji Alese) and I’ve answered Conor there.

‘Caballero at the right price I would certainly look at him and I think that’s where it’s at for Pompey.

‘John was very upfront about Caballero in terms of if they could renegotiate the set fee then they would look at that. And I can see why, but it would have to be at the right price.

‘There’s something there with him but it would get to a threshold where by if it was at the money they were talking about, I think you’ll be looking to find better value elsewhere.’
