'Need to improve. Worth a punt': Contrasting Portsmouth opinions over Conor Chaplin swoop after Ipswich Town decision
Conor Chaplin netted two goals and collected three assists in 37 appearances for Pompey this season.
The Fratton faithful have taken to social media to discuss Conor Chaplin’s future after his Ipswich Town released last week.
It brings to an end a five-year stay at Portman Road for the forward, who helped guide Kieran McKenna’s side from League One to the Premier League.
Chaplin netted 56 goals and collected 18 assists in 174 outings for Ipswich, who opted against triggering a 12-month option on his deal following their return to the top flight.
This will now see the former Barnsley and Coventry City man become a free agent this summer as his search for a new club begins.
The versatile attacker, of course, completed his Fratton Park homecoming in September, penning a season-long loan from the Tractor Boys.
With the 29-year-old now on the lookout for a new club, supporters have been split as to whether John Mousinho’s troops should pounce to re-sign the boyhood Blue on a permanent basis in the upcoming transfer window.
We put the question: Should Pompey make a move to sign Conor Chaplin now he’s a free agent? to fans on social media. And it’s a decision which has offered contrasting opinions.
Here’s the best of the reaction from Facebook.
Contrasting Pompey verdict over Conor Chaplin move
Mat Chalke: Free transfer no brainer. Last season he was coming back from injury. Have a feeling with a decent pre-season under his belt he will be back up and firing, and a firing Connor Chaplin would make a big difference for a team like Pompey. Not sure where else we could get a player with his Championship experience.
George Stevens: If there is a position where he is best fit - yes. Based on last season, that’s a no.
Peter Soley: He had a great season in the Championship with Ipswich when they were promoted and he was used properly. If wages are reasonable, worth a punt.

Steve Charlton: Yes played in the right position he’ll be an asset.
Steve Ned Needham: May be worth but where would JM play him? Segecic is Pompey’s No10.
Malcolm Edwards: Just go and get him.
Brian House: No, he didn’t really light up the team as I thought he would, can’t be sentimental.
Greg Adam: As long as his wage demands aren't too high. Wasn't as amazing as we thought he would be on his return but still a great player that will give his all!
Tony Michaels: Yes, he's absolutely quality if played in his preferred position.
Paul Taylor: On this season's evidence I would say no.
Ann Walmsley: Depending on salary, yes, as back up, but he didn’t impress this season.
Keith Mountifield: Absolutely, as long as his wage demands aren't ludicrous.
Ronnie Trotman: No, we need to improve and push on.
Paul Backshall: I think he deserves another season with us, especially after kick-starting our survival run with that goal against Middlesbrough.
Alex Dillon: Yes, and sign a decent right winger as well, so Chaplain doesn't have to play as a winger, like he did half of this season.
