Huge Portsmouth favourite released by promoted Championship rivals Ipswich Town

News of the Fratton favourite’s exit from his parent club today, following their promotion to the Premier League.

Conor Chaplin will become a free agent this summer - as he’s released by Ipswich Town.

The huge Pompey favourite will leave Portman Road after five years, as his existing deal comes to a close on July 1.

Chaplin to become a free agent this summer as he leaves Ipswich Town

Chaplin has spent this season on loan at Fratton Park, after making an emotional homecoming on the final day of the transfer window last summer.

The 29-year-old’s return didn’t match up to lofty expectations, with the academy graduate returning two goals and three assists from 42 appearances.

Ipswich had the opportunity to take up a 12-month option on Chaplin’s agreement, but have opted to let the former Coventry City and Barnsley man leave as a free agent.

It means Chaplin will be looking for new employers this summer, as one of the highest-profile out-of-contract players in the Championship.

Pompey boss John Mousinho has indicated on more than one occasion a permanent deal for Chaplin is something he would consider.

He said to BBC Radio Solent earlier this month: ‘We’ll see what happens with Ipswich first in terms of the priority and the option they have on the player.

‘If they don’t, then it’ll definitely be a conversation between us and Conor’s agent in the summer so left it open from that point of view.’
