Fresh development in Sheffield Wednesday’s reported interest in Portsmouth favourite Colby Bishop

Sheffield Wednesday reportedly have an interest in Pompey favourite Colby Bishop this summer.

Any potential move to Sheffield Wednesday for Colby Bishop this summer looks off the cards.

Our sister paper, The Star, claimed last month that Henrik Pedersen’s side had the 29-year-old on their list of centre-forward targets in the window.

But a swoop for the ‘Magic Man’ would likely come at a significant price, with still having two years to run on his current Fratton Park deal.

That is something Sheffield Wednesday are now unlikely to pursue after a concerning transfer update from new owner David Storch.

Concerning Sheffield Wednesday update amid Colby Bishop interest

The American businessman provided a statement regarding their current finances, stating that although player sales can be reinvested across the wider football operation at Hillsborough, including player wages, they do not increase the transfer fee budget - something which has already been agreed with the EFL.

This means significant transfer outlays are unlikely to take place in the Steel City this summer, casting further doubt over any potential move for Bishop.

A statement on the Sheffield Wednesday website read: ‘I also want to speak openly about our current operating environment.

‘Following administration, we are operating within an agreed financial framework with the EFL for the next two seasons.

‘We are aligned with that approach and believe sustainable, disciplined decision-making is the right foundation for the club’s long-term success.

‘This includes a league-approved operating budget, no ownership equity funding and a defined transfer fee budget.

‘Although player sales can be reinvested across our wider football operation, including player wages, they do not increase the agreed transfer fee budget.

‘I share this not as an excuse, but because I believe in transparency.

The reality is we are rebuilding, which makes smart leadership and long-term thinking even more important. But let me be clear – these constraints do not change our ambition. Not one bit.

‘Michael, Tom and I remain fully committed to building a successful, sustainable Sheffield Wednesday that competes at the highest possible level and makes this city proud.’

John Mousinho looking to keep Colby Bishop at Pompey

Despite a difficult Championship campaign at Fratton Park for Bishop last term, the frontman had finished as the Blues’ top-scorer in his previous three campaigns.

Following his £500,000 arrival from Accrington Stanley in 2022, the huge fan favourite has netted 60 goals in all competitions at PO4, of which 41 have come in League One.

After the multi-million pound signing of Marko Milovanovic last week, John Mousinho has made it clear he is now happy with his centre-forward department.
