Pompey kept the promotion-chasing Boro at arms length at the Riverside Stadium, with John Mousinho’s putting in a brilliant defensive display despite the hosts controlling the play in the north east.

Nicolas Schmid came to the rescue on a number of occasions throughout the afternoon, denying the likes of Sontje Hansen, Riley McGree and Alan Browne.

Mousinho’s troops remain one point above the drop zone as the race for survival heats up with five games remaining in the campaign. troops

And the Fratton faithful on social media are in full belief the Blues can avoid a return to League One after a brilliant 1-0 triumph over Middlesbrough.

Pompey fans share thoughts after Middlesbrough draw

@_PompeyArg: Our manager put together an excellent team. It's obvious we have far fewer players than Middlesbrough, but Mousinho made the most of what little we had, scoring a fantastic goal. Schmid was incredible.

@PompeyTdog: Wow, we had no right winning that, incredible performance.

@slaavzz: Finally we’ve won a game that we deserved to! Battered them all game.

@matthewfs2000: Build Chappers a statue.

@ProudieYT: Give Chappers a statue, the keys to the city, and the freedom of Pompey.

@Pfcowen11: The great escape on repeat.

@alexwells9689: Incredible. The character of the boys to defend for the whole game and stick one in the onion bag in the last second to win it. Proud, monumental moment!

@Ellz_PFC: Football is class.

@mmmpfc: We’ve been on the wrong side of them all year, nice for it to be us for a change

@Stew_Smith1: This could be a massive win for safety.
