Portsmouth's leader offering continuing certainty in uncertain times
Pompey’s on-pitch leader continues to be a central figure at PO4 - making Friday night’s contract news something to be celebrated.
His contribution to league title success for his hometown club was undeniable and is written in the Pompey annals in perpetuity.
Marlon Pack held The News/Sports Mail player of the season trophy aloft at the final home game of the halcyon 2023-24 campaign, a pinch-me moment for the Buckland boy as he followed in the footsteps of his Fratton heroes.
In many ways, Pack’s form this season supersedes even his title-winning displays
The recognition didn’t end there with the club award coming the midfielder’s way along with recognition from his peers, via a place in the EFL League One team of the season.
This, of course, arrived amid delirious scenes, as seven years of League One purgatory ended in a never-to-be-forgotten campaign.
But, in many ways, what we’ve seen from Pompey’s on-pitch leader this season has superseded even those gargantuan efforts, as the academy graduate once again stepped up when his team - and football club - needed him most.
Pack’s contribution to the 2025-26 campaign has totalled 34 appearances, with 22 of those outings coming as starts.
Yet it’s 13 of those 22 starts arriving consecutively when it mattered most at the business end of the season, that has really elevated the midfield schemer’s contribution.
It’s no coincidence that Pack coming into the starting XI at Charlton Athletic in February, coincided with back-to-back away successes at The Valley and Millwall.
There was a balance and synergy to Pompey’s midfield in those wins, with a blend of attributes between the 35-year-old, Ebou Adams and John Swift which ticked all the boxes required for central dominance.
Yes, tougher moments were to follow, but Pack’s personal form remained consistently elevated and a central aspect in his team coming to the boil in irresistible fashion when it mattered most.
Few people, including his manager would have anticipated such a seminal role, as the 2022 arrival stepped forward 12 months on from his career seemingly winding down.
Pack’s end-of-season contribution being cameos from the bench - amid eight games without a start back then - suggested that was the case. How wrong anyone thinking that was proved to be.
So the news which duly arrived on Friday evening is a development to be celebrated, as the Pompey boy’s homecoming stretches into a fifth season.
Amid uncertain times it offers reassurance to supporters that not only will standards be maintained, but the Blues dressing room will continue to understand the requirements and qualities demanded to represent this club.
Pack’s importance and attributes on that front make him a certainty to one day transition from dressing room to management.
But let’s not be too hasty, you’re a long time retired in this business and Mr Pompey’s time certainly hasn’t come just yet.
