Former Portsmouth and Norwich City man surprise frontrunner for Ipswich Town role as Championship rivals ruthlessly sack boss

The latest managerial talk involving Pompey’s rivals.

John Mousinho’s Fratton Park future had been under the spotlight during the early parts of the summer.

The head coach, of course, guided the Blues to an 18th-placed finish last term and crucially secured Championship survival for the second-successive campaign.

That had sparked interest from elsewhere, with the 40-year-old on Bristol City’s radar soon after the season’s climax as they began their search for Gerhard Struber’s permanent successor.

Although talk over Mousinho’s Fratton future has since calmed, managerial movement across the Championship and involving former Blues favourites remains rife.

Gary O’Neil surprise Ipswich favourite

Former Pompey favourite Gary O’Neil has been installed as the early frontrunner to succeed Kieran McKenna at Ipswich Town.

The Northern Irishman announced his surprise departure from Portman Road on Wednesday evening after four-and-a-half years at the club.

The 40-year-old confirmed he would be taking a break from the dugout after leading the Tractor Boys’ back to the Premier League.

The search for McKenna’s successor is already well underway, with the bookmakers’ naming their early favourites.

And O’Neil is the current frontrunner for the vacancy, according to the bookies, who have priced the Strasbourg boss at 1/2.

The ex-Pompey, Bolton Wanderers and Norwich City man has spent five months at the Stade de la Meinau after Liam Rosenior at the Ligue 1 outfit.

The 43-year-old led Le RCS to the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League as well as an eighth-placed finish in France’s top-flight last term but missed out on European football next season.

Former Fratton favourite O’Neil rose through the ranks at PO4 and went on to amass 192 appearances for the Blues before his 2007 departure.

Wolves to ruthlessly sack Rob Edwards

Wolves are set to sack Rob Edwards as they prepare for life back in the Championship.

National and international reports have claimed Pompey’s new second-tier rivals are set to call time on the head coach’s seven-month stay at Molineux in brutal circumstances.

It has been reported the West Midlands outfit will appoint Portuguese coach Cesar Peixoto as the 43-year-old’s replacement, with Edwards only learning of his dismissal through social media.

The head coach, who opted to depart promotion-chasing Middlesbrough in November 2025 for Molinuex, played a key role in the arrivals of Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez earlier this week.

But the ex-Luton Town and Watford man’s short stint with Wolves now appears to be over, with Peixoto finalising details to take over.

The 46-year-old is currently head coach of Primeira Liga outfit Gil Vicente, who finished sixth in Portugal’s top flight last term.

Pompey will face Wolves for the first time since the 2009-10 Premier League campaign, where the Blues completed a rare double on their way to relegation.
