Portsmouth January arrival earns maiden international call-up after frenetic Fratton Park introduction

Gustavo Caballero has netted one goal in his seven Pompey appearances following his January loan move from Santos.

Gustavo Caballero has earned a maiden call-up to Paraguay’s senior side ahead of the upcoming international break.

It’s been a frenetic start to life at Fratton Park for the winger, who arrived on deadline day, penning a loan deal - with a permanent option in the summer - from Brazilian outfit Santos.

The 24-year-old has already established himself as an integral part in John Mousinho’s frontline, which has seen him start five of his seven Blues outings to date.

During that time, Caballero netted his only goal to date in Pompey’s 3-1 triumph over Millwall last month and has become a hugely-popular figure amongst the Fratton faithful.

His impressive Championship displays have now earned him a maiden international call-up with Paraguay for the upcoming international break taking place later this month.

Although the tricky forward represented his nation in the 2024 Olympics, the forward is yet to register a cap for the senior outfit, despite amassing four outings at U23s level.

Paraguay automatically qualified for the upcoming tournament, which takes place in Mexico, Canada and the United States, after finishing sixth in the South America rankings.

Indeed, Alfaro has taken note of the Pompey forward’s strong displays in England and has been included in the 26-man squad for their friendlies against Greece and Morroco later this month.

Caballero will be looking to make a good impression while on international duty as he bids for a spot in Paraguay’s World Cup plans as they face Australia, the United States and an unconfirmed side in Group D.

Although Caballero has had prior international experience, featuring in Paraguay’s Olympic squad in Paris in 2024, his call-up represents his first for the senior side.

Speaking to news outlets in South America, the Pompey winger admitted it would be a ‘dream’ to be involved prior to the World Cup and showcase his talent.

He said: ‘I have been speaking recently with coach Alfaro’s assistant. I am happy that they are already considering me.

‘It would be a huge dream to wear the national team shirt. All players dream of that.’

Ahead of the upcoming international break, which begins later this month, Caballero is expected to play key roles in Mousinho’s side for this evening’s showdown against Derby County and during Saturday’s trip to QPR.
