New Portsmouth favourite in consideration for ‘dream’ World Cup call-up after frenetic Fratton introduction
Gustavo Caballero has netted one goal in his seven appearances for Pompey following his January loan move from Santos.
Gustavo Caballero has revealed he has been in contact with Paraguay over a maiden national team call-up ahead of this summer’s World Cup.
And the winger has opened up on his frenetic start to life in English football after completing the shock move from Brazilian outfit Santos in January.
The 24-year-old was one of seven new arrivals at Fratton Park during the winter transfer window, penning a loan deal for the remainder of the campaign which also includes an option to buy in the summer.
Following his switch, Caballero has already established himself as a prominent fixture in John Mousinho’s armoury, so far netting one goal in his seven appearances.
The former Paraguay youth international has been heavily praised by both the head coach and the Fratton faithful, who are adamant the Blues should take up his option at the end of the season.
Pompey winger in contention for World Cup involvement
And his impressive performances in the Championship haven’t gone unnoticed at international level either.
Although Caballero represented his nation in the 2024 Olympics, the forward is yet to register a senior cap for Paraguay, despite amassing four outings at U23s level.
Paraguay automatically qualified for this summer’s World Cup, which takes place in Mexico, Canada and the United States, after finishing sixth in the South America rankings.
Indeed, head coach Gustavo Alfaro has taken note of Caballero’s strong displays in England, with the Pompey winger in consideration over a potential national team call-up ahead of the upcoming tournament.
Speaking to Paraguayan news outlets Urbana Sports and Fútbol a lo Grande, the Blues favourite said: ‘I have been speaking recently with coach Alfaro’s assistant. I am happy that they are already considering me.
‘It would be a huge dream to wear the national team shirt. All players dream of that.’
Gustavo Caballero on frenetic Pompey start

It’s been an all-action start to life at Fratton Park for Caballero, who has amassed seven Championship outings to date.
The winger registered his first full 90-minute showing during the Blues’ 2-1 defeat to Swansea City in midweek and was bright spark in what was a frustrating evening for Mousinho’s troops.
With his performances on the rise, the 24-year-old has lifted the lid over the opening weeks on the English south coast - and the key role the Blues boss wants him to play in the final 10 games of the season.
He added: ‘I came with a clear mentality to earn minutes here in English football.
‘There is a lot of dynamism and intensity here. The teams have a clear idea of how they play and that stays consistent. It is very competitive football.
‘I am very well here in England. I am adapting to what the coach asks from me. He asks me to make the most of my speed.
‘The fans here are very passionate. Both home and away our team takes a lot of supporters.’
