An eighth-placed finish hardly eases the frustration of once more being unable to make the play-offs, let alone regain their place in the Championship.
Nonetheless, there are those who emerged from the season with plenty of credit, while others were a huge let down – and here are our player-by-player ratings for 2022-23.

5. Connor Ogilvie - 7
As ever, Connor Ogilvie has been Pompey's Mr Reliable and curiously finished as joint-second top scorer in the league with five. Occupied three different positions, including a five-game stint at right-back, and fought off Denver Hume at left-back to the point where the Blues are now ready to offload the ex-Sunderland man. There was a mid-season lull, but ended the season strongly, with John Mousinho encouraging him to attack more, culminating four missed chances against Wycombe. 6. Denver Hume - 4
A first-team return of 102 minutes under John Mousinho tells its own story about a left-back who is likely to depart Fratton Park this summer. The £200,000 capture was initially sidelined through a back injury at the season's start and, upon recovery, failed to establish himself under two Blues managers, with just four league starts. Unable to dislodge Connor Ogilvie, after deputising while his rival was injured for Morecambe in April, tellingly he didn't make the next squad, representing another blow in a forgettable time on the south coast. 7. Sean Raggett - 7
As ever, gets criticised for his League One shortcomings rather than praised for defensive strengths, with his aerial ability surely among the strongest in the division. Hampered by a pre-season injury, the Blues never really saw the best of Sean Raggett until the turn of the year, when he rediscovered his form, coinciding with John Mousinho's arrival. Was dropped to the bench for the final three matches with Pompey keen to look at Di'Shon Bernard as a right-sided centre-half, yet Raggett remains very much in the head coach's first-team thoughts. 8. Clark Robertson - 6
Another injury-impacted season for the club captain, although was overlooked for the final four matches, despite being fit. A classy distributor of the ball from the back and even put on corner duties for a time under Danny Cowley, who was keen to utilise the Scot's ability to deliver a ball. The arrival of Ryley Towler in January represented another left-sided centre-half option and he would soon eclipse the former Aberdeen man. Released by Pompey, Robertson won't be short of offers.
