5. Pompey 1-1 Birmingham - August 14, 2004
A fairly low-key start to the campaign for Pompey. They went a goal down through Robbie Savage’s effort for Brum on 10 minutes but David Unsworth struck from the penalty spot on his bow six minutes later to earn the Blues a point. Photo: .

6. Pompey 0-2 Tottenham - August 13, 2005
Alain Perrin’s woeful spell as boss started just as dismally. Andy Griffin’s first-half own goal put Spurs in front before Jermain Defoe’s 64th-minute strike consigned the Blues to their first opening-day loss in five years. Pompey would pull off their Great Escape that season to retain their top-flight status after Harry Redknapp returned as boss. Photo: ODD ANDERSEN

7. Pompey 3-0 Blackburn - August 19, 2006
A barnstorming start for Harry Redknapp’s side as they put Rovers to the sword. Svetoslav Todorov put Pompey in front in the first half before a second-half double from debutant Kanu sealed a fine win. Photo: .

8. Derby 2-2 Pompey - August 11, 2007
Perhaps a disappointing result for Pompey given just how good - and how bad the Rams were - that season. Benjani cancelled out Matt Oakley’s effort and John Utaka looked as if he’d won it for the Blues on 83 minutes, only for Andy Todd to equalise a minute later. The Blues would memorably capture the FA Cup that season and finish eighth in the table. Photo: Neal Simpson
