EFL release statement on points deductions imposed on Pompey relegation rivals

There has been some good news for one of Portsmouth’s Championship relegation rivals.

One of Portsmouth’s relegation rivals has been handed a major boost after the EFL and Club Financial Review Panel confirmed Sheffield Wednesday will not be hit with any further points deductions as a chaotic period appears to be finally drawing to a close.

The Owls are currently sitting rock bottom of the Championship and look all but certain to spend next season in League One after winning just one and drawing six of their 20 league games ahead of Saturday’s trip to Ipswich Town. However, Henrik Pedersen’s side are actually sitting on -9 points after they were hit with a number of points deductions as they recover from the numerous financial breaches under the ownership of Dejphron Chansiri.

A latest points deduction came earlier this month as the Owls were hit with six-point deduction for a failure to pay players in March, May and June and for other non-payments that were due to club staff and HMRC. Chansiri’s controversial ownership was brought to an end earlier in the season when Wednesday entered administration and their attempts to find a new owner appear to be reaching a successful conclusion with several parties said to have shown an interest in taking over.

A statement released by the CFRP on Friday has now confirmed the Hillsborough club will not be hit with any further penalties and that news has been welcomed by the EFL itself.

Recommendation

A statement from the CFRP said: “The independent Club Financial Review Panel has published its decision in relation to breaches of payment regulations in 2025/26 by Sheffield Wednesday FC, which now confirms that no further sporting sanctions should be applied. The decision was reached following consideration of a recommendation by the CFRU and the recent conclusion of separate Independent Disciplinary Commission proceedings, initiated by the EFL, where the Club was deducted six points for financial breaches and an additional 12 points for entering administration in October 2025.

“The Panel opted to accept the recommendation put forward by the CFRU - supported by both the Club and EFL - on the basis that all breaches in both 2024/25 and 2025/26 are as a result of a lack of financial resources being made available by Mr Chansiri. This has led to the subsequent sporting sanctions that have already taken effect in the 2025/26 Championship table.

“It therefore agreed that any further immediate points deduction would be unjust. Consideration was given to imposing additional sanctions, however they were of the view that such an action may deter potential bidder(s) from entering the process and delay the Club’s exit from Administration, which provides an opportunity for new ownership to take control, rebuild the Club and provide a positive future for all those associated with Sheffield Wednesday FC.”

The EFL added: “Following the publication of the Club Financial Review Panel’s (CFRP) decision in respect of breaches of payment obligations by Sheffield Wednesday FC in the 2025/26 season, the League notes and welcomes its decision not to deduct further points from the Club. The Club entering in Administration in October 2025, alongside the conclusion of separate Independent Disciplinary Commission proceedings for breaches in 2024/25, has resulted in deductions of 18 points which have taken effect in the current season.

“The EFL now remains focused on supporting the Administrators of the Club to progress a sale in an orderly manner. On exit from Administration, the League will agree an appropriate business plan to enable the Club to move forwards. It remains important that this happens at the earliest opportunity in order to end the current uncertainty surrounding its future for its staff, supporters and wider community.”
