At the 12-game mark, John Mousinho’s men remain undefeated and six points clear of third spot after racking up six successive wins in all competitions.
Admittedly, these are still early days for the Blues, but let’s have a look at those players who have taken them to such an encouraging position to date.
Here is every member of Pompey’s playing squad rated and reviewed for their contribution so far in the 2023-24 campaign...

17. Ben Stevenson - 6
No doubt so far a season of frustration for the summer recruit from Forest Green Rovers, who has found himself a bit-part player. Included in just five of the opening 12 squads, while Port Vale was his league debut for the Blues. Stevenson has done little wrong, it's just that Marlon Pack, Joe Morrell and Alex Robertson are well ahead at present. Still, a starter in cup competitions and netted his maiden Pompey goal in the 5-1 win over Gillingham in the EFL Trophy. (5 games, 1 goals) Photo: Jason Brown

18. Terry Devlin - 6
The teenager has grown into his role at Pompey and appeared off the bench in five of the last six league games. It reflects his growing importance to his Blues squad, with his Northern Ireland under-21 career also blossoming. Bounced back from a poor miss at Derby to be involved in Colby Bishop's last-gasp leveller, while did an excellent job on the right against Barnsley to help his team cling on to their slender advantage in the 3-2 success. Still highly regarded by the Blues' management, with his energy, enthusiasm and fitness levels. (8 games, 1 goal) Photo: Jason Brown

19. Tino Anjorin - 6
The long-running pursuit meant he arrived with huge expectations and, while there have been glimpses, we are still waiting for the Chelsea man to fire. He's been fortunate that, with Pompey winning games, it has allowed John Mousinho to ease him into the side and let him adjust to regular football again considering his injury history. Scored with an acrobatic overhead kick against Gillingham in the EFL Trophy during a 45-minute cameo as he builds up match fitness. (5 games, 1 goal) Photo: Jason Brown

20. Gavin Whyte - 5
Been a disappointing start to his Fratton Park career after dropping down from the Championship with Cardiff. Has operating on the left wing, right wing and as a 10, yet still not quite sparked into life while other summer newcomers have enjoyed strong beginnings. However, has recently come off the bench and showed improved form, particularly at Wigan and then home to Wycombe. They represent encouraging signs that Whyte may be heading towards fulfilling his talent. (13 games, 0 goals) Photo: Jason Brown
