At the 12-game mark, John Mousinho’s men remain undefeated and six points clear of third spot after racking up six successive wins in all competitions.
Admittedly, these are still early days for the Blues, but let’s have a look at those players who have taken them to such an encouraging position to date.
Here is every member of Pompey’s playing squad rated and reviewed for their contribution so far in the 2023-24 campaign...

13. Joe Morrell - 8
Before this season, curiously had failed to convince every Pompey fan of his talents, despite excellent post-World Cup finals form with only Colby Bishop performing better last term. Surely there can't be any current doubters, however, as Morrell goes from strength to strength in a Pompey shirt. Such a key figure, his presence is even more essential in the injury absence of Pack. Now skippering the side, reflecting his importance in the dressing room and another member of the club's leadership group. (14 games, 0 goals) Photo: Jason Brown

14. Tom Lowery - 4
Started the season opener against Bristol Rovers and managed just 45 minutes before substituted with knee ligament damage, ruling him out for potentially at least three months. More wretched luck for the popular midfielder, whose time at Pompey has been blighted by injury. (1 game, 0 goals) Photo: Jason Brown

15. Alex Robertson - 8
When Pompey were thwarted in their initial pursuit of Tino Anjorin, they instead recruited Robertson from Manchester City and he has proven an impressive signing. Capable of operating in an attacking midfield role or as a number six, it's crucial versatility which has established him as a first-team regular. Clearly a player with great potential, he has already assisted Paddy Lane for two goals, but much more is still to come - including a maiden Pompey goal. With seven bookings so far, that needs to be addressed. (13 games, 0 goals) Photo: Jason Brown

16. Abu Kamara - 7
Along with Jack Sparkes, has appeared in every Pompey match this season. It reflects the encouraging early impact of the Norwich loanee who has cemented his place on the left-hand side of midfield. Missed the crucial penalty in the Carabao Cup defeat to Peterborough but, impressively, that hasn't put him off his stride. So effective getting to the byline and pulling the ball back, while beginning to improve with his tracking back to help out defensively. The 20-year-old appears to be growing with every game.
