During that period alongside John Mousinho, he has overseen the Blues capturing the League One title and now enjoying successive seasons in the Championship, currently in 14th spot.
With the Hughes era beginning in October 2022, we’ve taken a look at 16 loan recruits since then – rating each of them.
NOTE: These do not include Pompey’s 43 permanent signings since then during that time, which can be viewed here.

13. Florian Bianchini - JURY'S STILL OUT
(7 games, 0 goals) Started three of Pompey's opening four league games, but has drifted away of late following that frustrating Sheffield Wednesday display. He wasn't even used off the bench against Watford and Middlesbrough. Has a great work ethic and is clearly committed, while there is a welcome directness and pace about his game. But the end product has been glaringly absent - much to everyone's frustration. Photo: Graham Hunt

14. Rob Atkinson - HIT
(15 games, 2 goals) Hadn't played competitive football for two years through injury before his Pompey arrival from Bristol City, but proved to be an inspired signing. An absolute rock in Pompey's defence, tremendous professional, natural leader and also weighed in with two goals - three if you include putting through his own net - in the crucial 2-2 draw with Derby. Will always be welcomed back. Photo: Jason Brown

15. Conor Chaplin - JURY'S STILL OUT
(Four games, 0 goals) By his own admission, the Ipswich has rated his form back at Fratton Park as 'bang' average. Having started in the number 10 role, he has been moved to the right flank for the first time in his career. There were encouraging signs against Middlesbrough, although he was dreadful against Sheffield Wednesday - among many - and Watford. Still early days, though. Photo: Graham Hunt

16. Minhyeok Yang - JURY'S STILL OUT
(5 games, 2 goals) What was initially a hugely underwhelming start to life at Fratton Park was turned on its head in a matter of days, following goal-scoring displays against Watford and Middlesbrough. Now handed a run in the side on the left, Yang looks a player transformed. Energetic, hard-working, always wanting the ball and clearly possesses an eye for goal. Please don't drop off!
