During that period alongside John Mousinho, he has overseen the Blues capturing the League One title and now enjoying successive seasons in the Championship, currently in 14th spot.
With the Hughes era beginning in October 2022, we’ve taken a look at 16 loan recruits since then – rating each of them.
NOTE: These do not include Pompey’s 43 permanent signings since then during that time, which can be viewed here.

9. Sammy Silvera - MISS
(12 games, 0 goals) Recruited on a season-long loan from Middlesbrough in July 2024, just a year after Pompey had been beaten to his permanent signing. But despite being employed on the left wing, right wing and as a number 10, nothing came off. It represented a disastrous spell for the likeable Australian, who lost his international place and, ultimately, the fans chanted for him to be sent back in defeat at Bristol City. Now apparently doing well with Middlesbrough. Photo: Jason Brown

10. Isaac Hayden - HIT
(17 games, 0 goals) Was average at the beginning, lost his place for five games, then returned strongly to drive Pompey over the finishing line to stay up. The Newcastle loanee definitely demonstrated his midfield talents in the final month on the campaign, enough to warrant a hit. Although it has been a slow start. Photo: Jason Brown

11. Adil Aouchiche - MISS
(12 games, 1 goal) The Sunderland loanee had the energy, commitment and enthusiasm - but sadly demonstrated very little creativity. Norwich was comfortably his high spot, with a superb display, but he broke his hand in the process and missed the last two matches. Flash but no substance - yet cannot fault his work-rate or attitude. Photo: Jason Brown

12. Kaide Gordon - MISS
(5 games, 0 goals) You'll struggle to remember Pompey's forgotten loanee. Returned to Liverpool from Norwich following a disappointing loan spell in the opening half of the season - was probably even more underwhelming at Fratton Park. Will do well to recall any of contributions, although, in fairness, he was meant to be purely back-up rather than threatening the first-team. Photo: Jason Brown/ProSportsImages
