Warning in place as heavy rain forecast to batter the south coast with the potential for snow

The wet start to 2026 is set to continue with more heavy rain, and possibly snow, on its way to Hampshire.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning due to potential flooding and disruption to travel services between 6am on Wednesday, February 18 until 8am on Thursday, February 19. As well as spells of heavy rain, there is also the potential for snow in the area.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “Spells of rain, some heavy, will affect southern parts of England during Wednesday and overnight into Thursday, whilst some snow is also likely over higher ground, chiefly during Wednesday night.10-20 mm of rain is expected quite widely with a few places near the south coast seeing 20-30 mm and perhaps as much as 50 mm over Dartmoor.

“Strong east to northeasterly winds will accompany the rain and/or snow, which could exacerbate impacts in places. Large waves could affect some east-facing coasts, especially along the English Channel.”

The inclement weather is expected to make journey times longer with drivers affected by spray and flooding which will in turn affect bus and train services. The Met Office advises people to plan their journeys ahead of time and be prepared to amend them depending on conditions.
