The improvement work in Castle Road, Southsea, is now extending further south by extending the new level paved surface and central pathway up to the junction with Southsea Terrace.
So far, almost 90 metres of Castle Road has already been upgraded with stylish block paving and four raised planters - and tree and shrub planting is now underway.
Cllr Steve Pitt, Leader of Portsmouth City Council with responsibility for Culture, said: “Castle Road is one of Southsea’s most iconic streets, and these improvements show our continued commitment to creating vibrant neighbourhoods where people feel proud to live, work, and visit.
“Extending the scheme further south reflects the clear support we’ve heard from residents and businesses, and we’re pleased to be delivering a safer, greener and more welcoming space.”
As part of the scheme, the area will benefit from high quality level paved surfaces, a central pathway for safer, easier movement and new planters and trees to add greenery and sustainable drainage.
Pete Codling, owner of Art Gallery at No.86 and founder & creative director of the Castle Road Community Association, said: “Our community of independent shops, artisan studios, cafés, restaurants and homes, overlooked by the iconic clocktower, brings a unique twist on a traditional high street.
“We look forward to the final section being completed in time to welcome visitors for the centenary celebrations, and to share the character and creativity that make Castle Road special.”
The project, which is being delivered by Colas Limited on behalf of Portsmouth City Council, is part of the council’s District Local Town Centre Programme to support vibrant, welcoming spaces that help local businesses thrive.
Giuseppe Mascia, owner of Giuseppe’s Italian Restaurant, added:“We are thrilled the new street scene will be extended to the entrance of our vibrant little community opposite Southsea Common.
“This is the perfect gateway to enjoy European café culture in the heart of Southsea – just in time for spring.”
