Wildfire causes road closure in Nutbourne

A road has been closed

A road closure is currently in place due to wild fire.

It has been reported that Priors Leaze Lane, Nutbourne, is closed in both directions this morning (July 13) due to a wildfire that broke out over the weekend.

The closure is in place from Broad Road to Crooks Lane, with the AA confirming there are no major delays.

A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said: “We were called at 2.12pm on Sunday, July 12 to reports of a fire in an open field off Priors Leaze Lane in Nutbourne.

“Joint Fire Control mobilised six fire engines and three specialist support vehicles to the scene. Firefighters worked to bring the fire under control and will continued to monitor the scene through the evening to ensure there are no further signs of fire.

“The combination of soaring temperatures and prolonged dry weather significantly increases the risk of wildfires, which can spread rapidly and cause damage to homes, countryside, wildlife and local communities.

“With further warm weather forecast this week, West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is urging all residents to take extra care to minimise the risk of a fire breaking out.”

This comes as experts warn that parts of the UK are at “exceptional” risk of wildfires as the heatwave continues. Natural England has said areas in southern England and the Midlands have been marked as being at highest risk.

The Met Office said the scorching heatwave conditions experienced by much of the country are due to last into the coming week, with most areas expected to stay dry, sunny and very hot.

Dave Swallow, National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) wildfire deputy lead and lead tactical adviser, warned that such conditions “significantly increase wildfire risk”.

He added: “But most wildfires start because something provides the spark.

“Whether it is a disposable barbecue left behind, a discarded cigarette or even a glass bottle left in the sunshine, we all have a role to play in preventing them.

“Summer should be a time for people to enjoy the outdoors but it’s important not to underestimate the risks. Every year we see devastating wildfires and tragic drownings in inland water.”

The West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has been contacted for more information.
