LIVE: Lorry smashes into bridge barrier and lands on road below in serious M3 crash - closure

Stretch of motorway closed

A lorry has ploughed into a motorway bridge barrier and landed on the road below in a serious crash, resulting in a road closure.

National Highways confirmed the link road from the M3 southbound to the junction 4 on the M27 westbound carriageway has been closed since approximately 10pm last night (August 11).

This is due to a “serious collision” which was attended by police officers who completed investigative work during the early hours of the morning.

The incident involved a lorry which crashed into the bridge barrier, causing it to leave the carriageway onto Chestnut Avenue.

The two left lanes which lead to the slip road for the M27 westbound have been closed, but the two lanes on the right of the southbound carriageway remain open.

Structural engineers are currently at the scene to fix the severe barrier damage.

A National Highways statement said: “There is no estimated time for reopening. Delays are building, plan ahead.”

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Roads Policing Unit previously said: “The two left lanes which lead to the slip road for the M27 westbound have been closed, but the two lanes on the right of the southbound carriageway remain open. Chestnut Avenue has also been closed between Nightingale Avenue and Falkland Road.”

A spokesperson for Hampshire County Council added: “Please avoid the area and use alternative routes.”
