Spinnaker Tower is set to turn blue

Spinnaker Tower is among 12 landmarks across the building that will turn blue tonight - here’s why.

The 170-metre tourist attraction, in Gunwharf Quays, will be lit up blue this evening (May 15) for Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) - a rare and devastating genetic condition that causes non-cancerous tumors to grow in the brain and other organs.

TSC affects around 1 million people worldwide, and a person is born with TSC, rather than it developing over time. TSC might not be obvious until later in life but it can include epilepsy, autism, learning difficulties and kidney problems.

As part of the campaign, Spinnaker Tower will be joined by Tower 42, Rochester Cathedral, Kent Gateshead Millennium Bridge, St Edmundsbury Cathedral, Ipswich Town Hall, Sacred Heart Presbytery, The Bridgewater Hall, Wakefield Town Hall Clock, Leeds Civic Hall and Leeds Town Hall, all of which will turn blue.

Luke Langlands, joint chief executive of the TSA, added: "Global TSC Awareness Day is a vital opportunity for us to make people more aware of what TSC is and how it affects thousands of lives, every day. For those outside of the TSC community, today is just 'another' day. For us, it's a lifeline and a way to bring people into our world. The more that people know about TSC, the more that can be done in our work towards a cure."
