Relief as Benny the dog rescued from air vent at Southsea Model Village in controlled operation
Panic has been replaced with relief this afternoon after emergency services raced to rescue Benny the dog who had become trapped in an air vent.
There are smiles all round at the Southsea Model Village, in Eastney Esplanade, this afternoon (December 18) after fire crews carried out a controlled operation to safely extract Benny the dog.
The air vent was not previously blocked off because it had been suspected to be a fox den - but the curious dog found himself stuck in the vent under one of the site’s buildings, prompting an emergency response.

Crews had to breach the wall to reach him after locating him with specialist camera equipment, with the village saying “Benny was scared but unharmed.”
The owner of the dog, Kate Underwood, was at the scene throughout the duration of the rescue alongside staff from the model village.
Southsea Model Village posted an update on its social media, saying: “We’re very relieved to confirm that Benny has been successfully rescued and is now safely back with his owners.
“We want to extend our sincere thanks to Fire and Rescue for their swift response and expert work, and to everyone involved for keeping the situation calm and safe.
“This has been a worrying afternoon for all concerned, but we’re grateful to be ending it with the best possible outcome. Benny is safe.”
