The new unit, which will also benefit from new signage including a projecting box and two slimline luminated badge signs, will have an outdoor area at the front of the property facilitating 12 seats as well as an indoor dining space, and access to 24 parking spaces.

Peter Chegwyn, leader of Gosport Borough Council, said: “I welcome the plans for a new Greggs bakery on Forton Road, Gosport.

“It's good to see respected national businesses and local independents investing in Gosport and creating new jobs. I'm sure this new Greggs on the main road into Gosport will prove very popular.”

The new chain plans to open between 6.30am and 6pm Monday to Friday, 6am and 6pm on Saturdays and 8.30am and 4.30pm on Sundays.

Lesley Meenaghan, vice chair of the health and social care committee at Hampshire County Council, said: “Greggs in Forton Road is welcome in respect of local jobs and affordable food for communities struggling with the cost of living crisis.

“But this deprived area of Gosport already has their fair share of cheap processed food. Our health statistics for Gosport show the challenge facing our communities. Our local families deserve better choices, not just cheaper ones. Economic investment is important, but so is long-term community wellbeing.”

Greggs has been contacted for a comment.
